About Us

The Armchair Director is an online film journal and community committed to the idea that the greatest insights into movies are achieved not in the theater, but in the conversations during the ride home.

A picture, they say, is worth a thousand words. At 24 frames per second for an hour and a half, every film has quite a story to tell. These days, we are all lucky enough to live in a flood of these stories: we grew up riding along on E.T.'s bicycle, clicking our heels with Dorothy, clapping for Tinkerbell. We get older, of course, and our appreciation deepens, but we never quite shake that sense of wide-eyed collective dreaming we learned as children.

The Armchair Director is an online film journal and community devoted to developing the bridge between that youthful wonder and our more mature and sophisticated insight into cinema as art. We are committed to the idea that by pooling our collective viewpoints we can all reinforce our appreciation for the silver screen, and to the belief that the greatest insights into movies are achieved not in the theater, but in the conversations during the ride home.

We invite curious movie-goers of all backgrounds to join us in our efforts to build a community of like-minded film-lovers—by contributing your perspective and experiences to our collective knowledge of film.
